 What is the USB488 Project?

The USB488 Project is to study a protocol (USB488) for controlling a measuring
instrument through the standard USB interface of a personal computer.
As part of international standard development undertaking by New Energy and
Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) for quickly rearing new
industries, this project was entrusted to Japan Electric Measuring Instruments
Manufacturers' Association (JEMIMA) and executed from May 1999 to March 2000 by
a working group developing a new standard interface protocol for electric measuring
  instruments.

 What is the USB488 Protocol?

The USB488 Protocol was created to realize an equivalent function to IEEE488 (GP-IB)
for measuring instrument control and data transfer using the Universal Serial Bus
  (Revision 1.1) interface.
Device-class construction and verification made the protocol practical enough with
functions for identifying an individual and making an interrupt from equipment as
measuring instrument interfaces, while taking advantage of the plug-and-play hot
plugs and up to 127 equipment connections available from USB.
